Core Skills: All levels (Reading and Vocabulary Study)

The core skills class is a self-directed reading and vocabulary study class with the support of an instructor acting as a literacy coach, and is taken by students at all three level.

The primary goal of this class to provide students with the requisite vocabulary and literacy skills needed to begin engaging with college level coursework. An additional goal of this class is to foster the habit of reading outside of class, a necessary habit for college freshmen

Requirements:

The ability to read novice-level texts is a requirement for this class. If a student is not able to do this, they may not be a good candidate for this program.

ESL 1 – English for Everyday Life

ESL 1 primarily geared towards students who have a basic foundation in English but
lack the confidence and proficiency to use English to fulfill their basic needs and engage
in basic conversations.

Requirements

Some basic foundation, such as awareness of the letter system is necessary to engage with classes at this level.

ESL 2 – Reading and Conversation

ESL 2 is to help students develop the literacy skills needed to engage with native English texts and think critically about readings. Research skills essential to college-level work are practiced through narrow reading and related projects. Upon completing this class, students will be able to work independently on college-level research projects and have a strong command of essential reading skills.

Requirements:

Learners at this level can communicate effectively on matters of daily life but lack the reading skills needed to begin taking college classes or contribute in the workforce. They should be able to read many elementary-level texts independently but may need support acquiring the critical thinking skills necessary to engage with texts more deeply.

ESL 3 – Academic Reading and Writing

ESL 3 will help students apply the literacy skills acquired in previous classes to engage with academic texts and master several common forms of writing necessary to engage in their future studies. This course aims to provide students with the environment and support needed to become an independent writer who can engage with academic subjects. Upon completion of this class, students will be able to participate in academic classes and be able to use English for a wide range of purposes.

Requirements:

A student at this level should be able to independently engage with most middle school level texts and be able to write a clear and logical story with 125 words in less than 6 minutes. They should be able to converse clearly and confidently on a range of topics.

These requirements are in place to ensure that students are getting the most out of their writing instruction and academic reading time.

Elective Classes

Elective classes are designed to supplement the leveled classes and core skills classes to provide students with practice in the areas they may be lacking. These could include a role-play course, reader’s theater, movie acting course, or even a sheltered content course. This slot in the day would also provide a great opportunity for program-wide activities, such as a game day at the end of the week.
